Biography

Steve Preston is the deputy city manager for San Gabriel, overseeing a staff of 28 in economic development, redevelopment, planning, building and safety, housing, engineering and public works.  He has been with San Gabriel since January of 1999.

Prior to arriving in San Gabriel, Steve was the community development director and deputy redevelopment director in La Verne for 10 years, during which the City won 14 awards for outstanding programs in planning, redevelopment and communications.

Winner of the 2000 Distinguished Service Award from California Chapter of the American Planning Association, Steve is a former president of CCAPA; a member of the California Planning Roundtable and the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners. 

Steve edits the publication AICP Casebook and chairs AICP’s Multi-Media Task Force; and he lectures occasionally in the graduate planning program at Cal Poly Pomona.   He chaired the task force that delivered the profession’s first national policy statement on sustainable growth.  He has bachelor and master degrees in planning from Cal Poly with an emphasis in policy administration and communications. He serves as a vice president of the Asian Youth Center in San Gabriel, chairs its Public Relations Committee, and is active in community and regional economic development organizations.
